Mr. Duncan Nderitu Ndegwa is a pioneering Kenyan statesman, philanthropist, and
visionary whose work has shaped the nation’s administrative, economic, and educational
landscape. As the first Secretary to the Cabinet and Head of the Civil Service in independent
Kenya, he played a critical role in building the governance structures of the new republic.
He later became the first African Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya, where his
leadership strengthened economic stability and enhanced Kenya’s global standing. Driven
by a strong belief in the transformative power of education, Mr. Ndegwa founded the Nyeri
Educational Trust and has personally supported over 3200 students. Through the Duncan
Nderitu Ndegwa Foundation, he continues to invest in community welfare, school
development, and cultural preservation, leaving an enduring legacy of service and
empowerment.

Mr. Duncan Nderitu Ndegwa is an eminent figure in Kenya’s national history, widely
respected for his groundbreaking leadership, intellectual contributions, and lifelong
commitment to service. His public career began at the dawn of Kenya’s independence,
where he became the first Secretary to the Cabinet and the first Head of the Civil Service. In
these roles, he laid the administrative bedrock that guided Kenya through its formative
years. His leadership excellence later positioned him as the first African Governor of the
Central Bank of Kenya, where he strengthened the country’s financial systems and projected
Kenya as a resilient and forward-looking economy.

Mr. Ndegwa’s greatest legacy lies in education and community upliftment. In 1971, he
played a pivotal role in establishing the institute that would become Dedan Kimathi
University of Technology by acquiring 600 acres of land and mobilizing donor support.
Recognizing the challenges faced by needy learners, he founded the Nyeri Form One Link
and later the Nyeri Educational Trust, through which he has single-handedly supported
over 2,600 students, ensuring they access secondary and tertiary education. He expanded
this mission through the Duncan Nderitu Ndegwa Foundation, which has contributed over
KES 60 million to education, school infrastructure, and essential needs for vulnerable
children.

Our Mission

His investment in educational infrastructure includes building the Duncan Ndegwa
Secondary School in 2013, the Duncan Ndegwa Primary School in Msabweni, and extensive
facilities at Chania Primary School. He continues to uplift schools such as Ngangarithi,
Giakanja, and Ndogamano through leadership, donations, and sponsorships. As Chairman of

Alliance High School (1977–1987), he made significant contributions and remains a
platinum sponsor of the school’s annual golf tournament.

Beyond education, Mr. Ndegwa is a scholar and author of several influential books
preserving Kenya’s political and cultural heritage. His publications include & Walking in
Kenyatta’s Struggles,Moi Kleptocracy,Boy from Cholongi,&Unduire Witu with
another titled When Kenya Tottered on the Brink forthcoming.
His community impact also extends to healthcare—having served as trustee and chairman
of Mt. Kenya Hospital—and to sports development as a patron of the Kenya Golf Union,
supporting administrative reforms, land protection, and tournament sponsorships.
Through his extensive work in public service, education, philanthropy, culture, and
community development, Mr. Duncan Nderitu Ndegwa has created opportunities for
thousands and remains one of Kenya’s most impactful and inspirational leaders.
